Each dividing daughter cell receives a copy of the single parental chromosome. Prokaryotes reproduce asexually which means that a single individual passes copies of all its genes to its offspring. The genome of the offspring is an exact copy, a clone, of the sole parent’s. Hence reproduction is not a source of genetic variation as for most eukaryotes.
