Reduction of metals induced by microbial action.

Enzymatic catalysis and non-enzymatic reduction are thought to be the key mechanisms involved in the bioreduction process. In certain microorganisms, various enzymes are believed to take an active part in transporting electrons from the electron donors to metal electron acceptors. Organic functional groups on microbial cell walls are believed to be responsible for the non-enzymatic bioreduction process. E.g. bioreduction of aqueous Ag+ ions by the fungus Verticillium AT-TS4; reduction of Pd2+ to Pd by sulfate-reducing bacteria.
