The use of microorganisms, such as bacteria or yeasts, or biological substances, such as enzymes, to perform specific industrial or manufacturing processes. Biotechnology is used in a number of industries which include:

  • Food industry: biotech-based enzymes are used to produce cheese and brew beer, to keep bread fresh, and to produce sweeteners, flavours and vitamins.
  • Mining: microorganisms are used in bioleaching and bioprecipitation processes.
  • Waste treatment: microorganisms are used to treat waste and clean up contaminated industrial sites.
  • Pharmaceutical: production of certain drugs and synthetic hormones.
