Carbon is the most abundant macronutrient in a cell and hence an important compound to build cell mass. Organisms have different sources of carbon. Lactose is a carbon source used for example by lactic acid bacteria. If the bacteria mutate in the lac gene they will have the phenotype Lac- which will make them unable to grow as lactose is their sole carbon source.
