Microbial EPS are the key components for the aggregation of microorganisms in biofilms, flocs and sludge. They are composed of polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and other biological macromolecules. Cell free EPS have been separated from the cells which have produced them.

At. ferrooxidans EPS consists mainly of neutral sugars and lipids [10] produced from UDP-glucose, UDPgalactose, and dTDP-rhamnose precursors [1].
