Glycolysis is the initial metabolic pathway of most types of carbohydrate catabolism and the foundation of both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Glycolysis produces ATP by substrate level phosphorylation and loads electron carriers with reducing power. Eukaryotes use the enzyme set of the Embden Meyerhof pathway while prokaryotes have at least three different types of glykolysis and subsequently three different sets of enzymes - The Embden Meyerhof pathway, the Entner-Doudoroff pathway and the pentose phosphate pathway.
