Horizontal gene transfer

Horizontal gene transfer is any process in which an organism (usually a prokaryote) transfers genetic material to another cell that is not its offspring.

Horizontal gene transfer is a unidirectional process where a donor transfers genetic material to a recipient. The donor does not transfer an entire chromosome but usually only plasmids or small chromosomal segments.
