A sedimentary rock composed principally of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). It is ordinarily white but may be coloured by impurities such as, iron oxide which makes it brown, yellow, or red and carbon which makes it blue, black, or grey. Most limestone deposits originate from the deposition and consolidation of the skeletons of marine invertebrates, but a few are formed by chemical precipitation from solution.

Slaked lime and quick lime originate from limestone.
