Respiration

The release of usable energy from oxidation of glucose or other organic substances inside living cells. Aerobic respiration refers to the respiration of organic material with oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor. Anaerobic respiration refers to respiration with terminal electron acceptors other than oxygen, e.g. nitrate and sulphate.
