Finely ground rock waste that remains after metals considered economically viable have been removed.

Particulate waste material produced during mining operations such as milling, concentration or ore treatment. Tailings are principally composed of waste gangue minerals but may also contain small amounts of the economically important minerals which have not been recovered during mineral processing.

Types

  • Flotation tailings - Residues resulting from flotation processes. It is mainly composed of mineral gangue
  • Sulphidic tailings must be taken care of so that they do not cause acid mine drainage.
