A salt of thiocyanic acid that is formed when alkaline cyanides are fused with sulphur.

Thiocyanate is one of the major constituents of waste water from coal processing factories, where various by-products are formed during the production of gas for fuel, coke and substances for chemical industries.

Cyanide waste products are usually converted to thiocyanate as it is less toxic and can be degraded by microbes.
