My topic of research is the aquatic microbial ecology. I study the diversity of bacterioplankton in aquatic environments and their function on carbon cycling, with the aim of identifying active groups of bacteria participating in carbon fluxes. Presently, I am studying the biogeochemical role of chemoautotrophic Archaea in freshwater and marine environments. Recently, it has been shown that members of this group are very abundant in some aquatic environments, and they are capable of fixation of CO2 in the dark, using the energy obtained by the oxidation of chemical compounds like ammonium. Thus, Archaea could have a key role in aquatic carbon and nitrogen cycles.
