A chemostat is a device for a form of continuous cultivation used in microbiology to grow and harvest microbes. A chemostat consists of two parts: a reservoir with sterile growth medium and a growth chamber. The culture in the growth chamber is maintained under constant conditions with a constant nutrient supply. Nutrients enter the chemostat with the incoming medium. The bacteria consume some of the nutrients during growth but the remaining nutrients exit the chemostat in the outflow together with the harvested bacteria. The constant nutrient supply makes it possible to grow the culture steadily for an extended period of time and the outflow balances the growth of the culture.
