A genome is the complete set of genes in an individual organism. Whether plasmids are part of the genome or not is sometimes controversial. In most cases the plasmid content is not included in the definition of genome.

The prokaryotic genome

Most prokaryotic genomes are less than 5 MB in size which is small relative to eukaryotic genomes. The (usually) single and circular chromosome is localised within the nucleoid.
