Jarosite is formed in the presence of sulfate and ferric iron, in environments in which the pH increases to above about 1.8. However, high concentrations of jarosite constituent molecules (sulfate, ferric iron, ammonium or potassium) will lead to jarosite formation at lower pH.

Jarosites may be a reason for passivation. The presence of jarosite in analyses of bioleached chalcopyrite supports this theory. However, other reports show slow leaching even at low constituent molecule concentration and low pH which contradicts this theory.
