Definition

A solution containing solubilized metal ions.

Origin

  • Caused by leaching. The metal bearing solution is then called leachate.
    • Applied leaching
      • Pregnant leach solution (PLS) – leachate from applied leaching operations intended for subsequent metal recovery
      • Bleed from metal production processes – a solution taken from a closed process stream in order to remove unwanted metal ions that otherwise would build up to high levels
  • ARD
    • Natural
      • Anthropogenic
      • Not caused by leaching
      • Industrial effluents and by-products
